  • built after the lines of the "Swift", a fast sailing vessel from the 18th century by W.A. Robinson in 1937, the original ship was rigged as a brig, "Swift of Ipswich" carries a topsail schooner rig
  • owned by William and James Cagney (actor in Hollywood) from 1940 to 1958, later she served as a charter boat in California
  • since 1963 she was operated by the Swift Associates Ltd. before she came to the Los Angeles Maritime Institute in 1991
  • now she sails short voyages in a youth program (TOPSAIL): "our goal is never to be in a port when we ought to be at sea, never to turn a kid away for lack of money, and never to sail with empty berth"
  • awarded by the ASTA as "The Sail Training Ship of the Year" 1995
