  • constructed at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in John Gibson Park, San Pedro, carried out by professional shipwrights together with trained volunteers, completed in 2003.
  • brigantine design bases on one from the 1930s, adapted to meet Coast Guard and Los Angeles Maritime Institute program requirements.
  • project was funded by private donations, corporate sponsorships, and foundation grants.
  • sister ships are named "Irving Johnson" and "Exy Johnson" in honour of the Johnsons and their life-long commitments to character-building sail training.
